Simulation of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine with turnable rotor blades

Unlike conventional wind turbines, VAWTs rotate vertically rather than horizontally.

FluiDyna simulated the aerodynamic forces and the momentum of turnable blades for a Swiss manufacturer of wind engines. Taking a certain number of revolutions as given, we computed the impacting forces on the rotor blades and varied the angle by which the blades were slanted towards the airflow.

By means of this complex simulation of fluid dynamics we were able to predict and optimize the output of the turbine as such providing support for an improvement in efficiency. The comparison of our aerodynamical simulation to test model data collected in a wind tunnel was affirmative, verifying the accuracy of our model.
